Here’s an inspiring video from Living Big In A Tiny House of a striking, unique home in Australia made from three shipping containers.
The first notable feature is the addition of a sloping roof on each container. This was undoubtedly done mainly for cooling, in order to create shade and keep the sun off of the steel roof of the containers. It’s also going to preserve the life of the steel and could easily be used in order to set up a rainwater harvesting system.
Short sections were added in between the three containers in order to create separation between the main living areas. I’m not sure if these were fabricated from a further shipping container but I am guessing they may have been created from the cutaway pieces that were removed from the main containers for the doors and windows.
Interlocked cladding was added on the outside using a Calbon (? – not sure if I got that right) product called “Designer Panel”. This also created an air barrier which was used to insulate. Further insulation was added on the inside and in the ceiling.
Another interesting thing about container housing is that it is modular: If you want more space, add another container! Also, being steel, you can cut doors and windows wherever you want and add structural elements as required.
The interior panelling was entirely put in using no-formaldehyde materials (smart) and has a clean modern look. You would have no idea that you are inside a shipping container!
