In this inspiring video by Living Big In A Tiny House Youtube channel we are treated to a mega solar installation near Melbourne, Australia.

We’ve seen tiny houses with small-scale solar power systems; now here’s one with a GIANT solar array! This setup has 4kw of solar panels, together with a gigantic 36kw of lead acid battery storage (equivalent to 30x 100Ah batteries) and a 4.5kW inverter. This gives them more than enough power for their home and enough to power a workshop used for a manufacturing business as well!

This includes some fairly hefty power use – they are using the power for welding and other power tools, as well as running air conditioning and an electric oven, which are two of the most power-hungry electric appliances that a typical home has! Glade (homeowner) states that his solar power system has been running for 4.5 years with no troubles.

We learn that this tiny home was made mostly using recycled and up-cycled materials, which is pretty fantastic. The overall cost of the build was around $10,000 (AUD) – without the cost of the solar power install, which must have been a similar cost! The cladding of the home was reclaimed and the windows and doors were all salvaged. The owners have some serious background experience in making things – with stonemasonry and guitar making experience – and it shows in the beautiful interior of the home

Water for the tiny houses on the property comes from rainwater catchment, which is piped into a 10,000 gallon tank, with water being pumped (electric pump) to the buildings.

It’s interesting to note the use of space, which of course in a tiny house needs to be carefully considered. Storage space “up aloft” has been built in, with ladder access, to make the most of the available space. Additional storage is built into seating and a table that folds against the wall can ‘disappear’ when not in use.

Overall this is a beautiful and inspiring off-grid home that is also practical and enjoyable for a close-knit family of four who seem to be loving their life!
