Here’s a useful video tutorial from well known bushcrafter / survivalist Survival Lilly, showing us 5 types of survival shelter that can be made in with natural materials found in the forest.
This tutorial has minimal dialogue; instead being a mainly visual presentation. We can just watch and learn.
The first thing I noticed is that her shelters are very well camouflaged! If someone was wandering through the forest, they would have to be fairly close to spot the shelter. If you had some time and patience, you could probably make even greater efforts to dig the shelter in a little and make it even more camouflaged.
The first shelter gives an interesting demonstration of staying warm without any bedding, just covering yourself in leaves. It’s probably going to be buggy and of course you would not want to do this in an area where there was poison oak! But in a desperate situation, the leaf layer really could keep you alive and you would do it. I’ll pack a sleeping bag if I can though.
The log wall is an interesting touch. It reflects heat from a fire back in towards the camp – and can potentially dry out some logs too!
Note of course that open fires should only be made in areas where it would not be a fire risk and where there are no restrictions on camp fires.
The bent pole shelter is a traditional setup; known as a “bender” in the UK. Best made from young hazel, ash or similar stems that have a high flexibility. Her version is somewhat elaborate but I have seen benders made very simple from single bent poles tied together in a dome shape and pushed into the ground. She’s using natural brush but you can of course throw a canvas tarp over the top.
The fourth shelter is a simple lean-to bivvy that uses a silver-backed tarp.
The fifth is more fancy, a teepee style shelter covered in moss and featuring a bed made from logs. I think that’s the winner both in terms of durability and comfort, but it’s the most time consuming to make. It’s good to have options that are ultra-fast to put up, to get out of bad weather if need be.
