Note – the information in this tutorial should be used legally and responsibly.

Zip ties are typically just a super-useful item that has countless uses. They make a perfect addition to a survival kit. However, zip ties have a “dark side” – and have bene used illegally in abductions to restrain the captive. Watch this video by Reality Survival about how to escape from them and take note of our extra tips.

Important thing to remember: Not all ties are created equal. Some can be broken easily and some are harder to escape from. The best way to defeat any type of restraint is to first study how it works. You can completely break the zip ties, pick the locking blade, use a friction saw or with a little forward thinking just be able to slip right out of them.

1: Strike. It may be possible to break the locking mechanism on common zip ties – however it will require quite a strike. If you are cuffed from the front (you are a bit more fortunate!), raise your hands above your head then jerk your arms downward with great speed and force. This is the method the uploader used in the video. The aim here is to strike your tied wrists on your upper abdomen as hard as possible by swinging your elbows far behind you. You can also strike down on your raised knee.

2: Pick. The locking blade can sometimes be picked by sliding a very thin piece of material into the zip tie’s lock. Examine a zip tie closely to understand how it works. You will see that it has a small locking bar that ratchets and keeps the tie closed. However if that bar is lifted from its position, the tie can be undone. Practice doing this with various types of zip tie so that you have greater skill to do this if required.

3: Saw. A rough edge such as brick, stone, metal, concrete, or cinderblock will cut through the zip tie plastic. Another great tip is that you mat be able to use a shoelace to “saw” through the zip tie. This will take a little while and would of course require that the captor leaves you alone. Bonus points if you already replaced your shoelaces with 550 paracord, which is another neat little survival trick. The paracord is likely stronger than most shoelaces and can take more abuse.

4: Slip. This is a great tip. If you are being bound, your captor will likely instruct you to put your hands out in front of you. Clench your fists and hold them rotated inwards (Palms down). This will increase the size of your wrists slightly. Keep fists tense until the zip ties are tightened. Then, perhaps a little later, unclench your wrists and turn them so they are facing inward. This may give you enough slack to slip free, and if not, it might make it easier to maneuver and perhaps pick up an object which can be used to pick or cut the zip ties.
