In this video by TinyHouseGiantJourney we see a long wheelbase Sprinter van that has had “the works”. It’s really a showcase and gives you insight into just what’s possible with these builds.
The Mercedes Sprinter has become one of the top choices for folks looking at van life and there are a huge number of build options available, as well as full guides that can help you do the work.
This sweet couple has been in the van life for several years. Their first van enabled them to both save money on rent, which was “really a life changer”.
When you are living in a van, it’s mission critical to make the best use of all the available space. We see a perfect design for a sofa that converts to a bed.
Heating is provided via radiant floors, hot air and hot water via a heat exchanger. Even above the snow line in the Sierras, they were barefoot inside the van.
It turns out that our couple “is in the business of off grid power” – in other words they know what they are doing when it comes to solar installation. Power comes from a 3200W inverter, with an 80A charge controller, and there are 1000W of solar panels on the roof. I didn’t learn what kinds of batteries they are using but this type of setup is great for a van because it’s powerful enough to run kettle, heating, induction cooktop – which eliminates the need for gas or other combustion based burners.
Refrigeration comes from a dual zone 12v fridge, which enables you to have either fridge/freezer or both sides as fridge.
One interesting choice they made was to not have AC, but have a powerful roof extractor fan, which when combined with open windows, creates a sufficient through draft to keep cool.
The shower setup (8:18) is impressive. It has a water recirculation system with filter and UV lamp, which cleans the water and reheats it, enabling you to “shower indefinitely” on a small amount of water – and flush the system into the grey water tank at the end. Genius!
I was amazed to see them walking on the solar panels, which double up as a roof deck and a garage, with a large storage space inside.
Finally we learn that the couple uses this setup in order to travel from project to project, running their business tinywattssolar.com while living on the road. Pretty cool way to live the dream…

An amazing discovery in an abandoned house in Austin, Texas: A lost book of amazing survival knowledge, believed to have been long vanished to history, has been found in a dusty drawer in the house which belonged to a guy named Claude Davis.
Remember... back in those days, there was no electricity... no refrigerators... no law enforcement... and certainly no grocery store or supermarkets... Some of these exceptional skills are hundreds of years of old and they were learned the hard way by the early pioneers.
We've lost to history so much survival knowledge that we've become clueless compared to what our great grandfathers did or built on a daily basis to sustain their families.
Neighbors said that for the last couple of years Claude has tried to unearth and learn the forgotten ways of our great-grandparents and claimed to have found a secret of gargantuan proportions. A secret that he is about to reveal together with 3 old teachings that will change everything you think you know about preparedness:
