Jay Shafer is a house designer of tiny but superbly functional dwellings. He has been designing these homes for eighteen years now and has completely mastered the art of making these tiny homes. His main reason why he ventured into making these types of houses is that he wanted to be more energy efficient and wanted to live in a house which is environmental friendly. According to him, his designs provide homeowners with everything they want and need, and nothing they don’t.

The video takes us on a tour inside Jay Shafer’s home which is 89 square feet, a very tiny living space but is more than enough for one person who has minimal needs. This home is superb for a minimalist but would probably not be so good for someone claustrophobic.

Living in a tiny house has the following benefits:

• Conserve energy. Smaller houses are often more energy efficient because they have less space to heat or cool. It requires less resource to build and less resource to maintain. And that benefits all of us.
• Less time cleaning. Fewer rooms means less time spent on cleaning and home maintenance.
• Less expensive. Smaller homes are less expensive to live in. You don’t need much power and as many appliances to keep it functional.
• Less clutter. You only get to keep the things you need the most since getting rid of all the unnecessary clutter.
• Being tidy doesn’t have to be so hard. Since you only have a couple of things then you can tidy them up immediately and with less effort.
• More time. Since it takes you lesser time to execute daily tasks then that means more free time in your schedule. You can now pursue whatever it is you want to do.
• Travel. The tiny home featured in the video had wheels which enables the owner to take it with him whenever he travels. Taking your whole house with you while road traveling will never be a bad idea.

The house in the video is designed and made by Shafman himself. One thing that I find really fascinating is his ability to maximize the storage capacity of a very minimal amount of space. If you want to live off-grid and want to be more self-sufficient then this house is definitely suited for you.
