This fantastically useful video from Nature Reliance School teaches us five simple yet incredibly useful knots that will serve you well in survival, hiking, camping, farming and more. The demonstrations are simple, clear and easy to follow. If you watch just one knot-tying tutorial, this should be it! 1. Half Hitch

Probably the first knot everyone learns. However here we learn not only the basic half hitch, but ways to combine two half hitches to create a knot that holds tight and can be released with a single pull.

Ancedote: When we were kids we used to tie what we called a “Benny Knot” – which was simply tieing one half hitch after another and keeping going until there was (in our minds) no possibility that it could ever come undone. Not recommended.

2. Fisherman’s Knot

Demonstrated with two different colored cords for visibility, this double-knot gives us a perfect way to join two cords that won’t come undone easily.

3. Prusik Knot

This useful knot will allow you to tie another cord to a ridge line that is already pulled taut. You’ve probably done a simple version of this without even knowing that this was what it was! However when the knot is doubled up in the right way, you have a perfect knot that can either slide or grip tightly depending on how tightly you cinch it down. This knot is used by climbers to climb up a rope; using two or more.

4. Trucker’s Hitch aka Canoeman’s Hitch

The super-useful trucker’s knot is a must-learn! The trucker’s knot creates a kind of pulley system from your rope; it’s designed to be attached to a load and then pulled super tight in order to cinch it down strongly. It’s also perfect for fixing guy ropes for a shelter and can give you the tightness to pull that tarp flat and secure it strongly.

5. Clove Hitch

The basic clove hitch is simple and ties a rope to a rod. Used to lift smooth cylindrical items as it will grip them well. Can also be used to tie feed sacks and bundles of sticks or rods.
