Here’s an interesting video from OYR Frugal & Sustainable Organic Gardening that focuses on garlic. This is your garlic 101 for your own garlic production with a ton of tips and facts related to every aspect of growing garlic!

The first step in the video is the explanation of the difference between the two main types of garlic – hardneck and softneck. Softneck is the typical type found in the supermarket. Hardneck, as expected from the name, has a stiff stem. Hardneck typically doesn’t store as well but is better suited to winter survival after being planted in the fall.

The least expensive way to grow your own garlic is by using your own saved cloves from the year before. You can also use garlic from the store, but choose organic because non-organic is sprayed with growth inhibitors (oh great).

OYR like to scatter their garlic around the garden rather than “monocropping” it in one place. This gives a greater resistance to pests and diseases. Crop rotation is employed.

Planting is easy, pushing in single cloves to about 3 inches deep in the soil, planting them around 4 to 6 inches apart and being sure to plant them “the right way up” with the pointy side at the top. After planting, the garlic patch is mulched with autumn leaves, keeping the ground covered.

Softneck garlic is ready to harvest at the time when the tops flop over. Hardneck, when a few leaves are turning yellow. Harvesting should ideally be done in dry conditions. The next part is curing, using either the typical method of hanging it up for a couple of weeks in a dry, airy, dark place, or laying it on racks.

The best, most successful cloves – you would think these are the prime ones to eat, however these are saved for the next crop. This makes sense because the next grop will now be more successful and better adapted to the local conditions.
