In this inspiring video from Exploring Alternatives, we learn about the life of a woman who has been living in a 24 foot by 8 foot tiny house for six years. Together with the loft spaces I am estimating the usable square footage at 288 sq ft.

The ridge of the roof is around 13.5 feet high and there is a sleeping loft.

The sleeping loft is very interesting, it has a side wall that not only creates a great sense of privacy and cosiness, but keeps the majority of the excess heat out that might be generated by the woodburner. On the other end, there is a storage loft.

The home is completely off grid – not connected to any utilities, however she does use propane for hot water, cooking and backup heating. She reports that she has “some” 100-pound propane cylinders, and these only need refilling around every 18-24 months. She also has 4x100W solar panels, which provides electricity for small appliances and lighting. She also collects her own water from a neighbour’s well, and has a composting toilet. This home is in a cold climate (snow up to 8 months of the year!) and we can see several feet of snow piled up in one photo. This reduces the growing season and limits the types of crop that can be grown. The main heating appliance is a wood burning stove; which in a fairly small space like this should see to it that things are toasty!

So much for the essentials, the home itself was built by professional builders, with whom she collaborated on the design. This is a great way to go for someone who has the dream but doesn’t want to learn all the skills or take the risks of doing it themselves.

One of the greatest attractions of this life is that once the home is built and paid for, you can look forward to a mortgage-free life, which dramatically costs the monthly living expenses. So you can see that with no utilities and no mortgage, the monthly living expenses must be low – which means… freedom! You are not going to be spending some of the best years of your life working 9-5 and can actually get in with living. She does numerous part time jobs and also exchanges some labor for the ability to live on the land, which belongs to a large private ranch.
