Papercrete is a construction material which consists of nothing more complex than paper, cement and water. Recently, papercrete is gaining support among “do it yourself” builders due to its low cost, light weight, and high performance in certain applications.

Papercrete builders are contributing to furthering the technology and sharing their experiences over the internet and the video by Marjmada we have shared gives a great tutorial. It shows how to make papercrete in a home made “tow mixer” and even walks you through making the mixer.

To make papercrete, you’ll need a mixer capable of shredding paper. In other words, it needs a blade. A regular cement mixer won’t do because it will just stir the paper around. Luckily for us, Mike McCain invented a simple mixer that you tow behind a truck. It utilizes a recycled car differential and old lawn mower blade. Once it is made, you just have to put the materials in it and drive slowly for a mile or so.

The tow mixer is basically a stock tank with a blade rotating inside like a giant food processor. When the mixer is towed behind a vehicle, the wheels turn the gears and the blade rotates chopping the paper and mixes it with water and cement. After it is thoroughly mixed and ready to use, the mixer is driven over the molds waiting on the ground. The papercrete is released through the nozzle at the rear of the mixer.

After dumping the slurry, trowel the top to smoothen and wait for 20 minutes before removing the molds. The curing process will take three days or more depending on the weather.

Papercrete is a great alternative building material. It’s cheap and it also helps the environment by recycling paper. It is lightweight but sturdy and has excellent insulating properties since paper is a great insulator, so walls of PC don’t need insulation.

Remember that Papercrete contains wood fibers and needs the same protection from the weather as wood. It will absorb water but will not become soft, due to the cured cement, however it can mold. Keep it dry and it will last forever. However due to the concrete, nothing eats it (goodbye termites!), also it won’t burn, rot or shrink.
