This video by the King of Random shows how you can convert a junk TV (the old cathode-ray type) into a solar concentrator that can generate heat up to 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Note – this is serious heat. It’s enough to melt coins and boil water in seconds so if you are planning on doing this project, practice extreme caution.

Old “cathode ray tube” TVs / monitors are really heavy and typically discarded now. They are entirely obsolete and not considered economical to repair. Most peoples trash these monitors as they can barely even give them away.

The TV screen itself contains a giant Fresnel lens, typically made of acrylic, which is the piece we are after.

Fresnel lenses capture an area of sunlight and redirect it towards a small area by refracting the rays of light and focusing them. People use similar principles when they use a magnifying glass to start fire… so you can just imagine the immense heat generated if your magnifying glass is two feet across! It is recommended to build a wooden frame for the Fresnel lens because it is too flimsy to hold on its own. Once it is installed onto the frame then all you have to do is hold the lens perpendicular to the sun.

There are various types of these lenses that can be found in old TVs. Some are not clear plastic and others focus the light to a beam rather than a point. Clear lenses that focus the light to a point are the most effective and will generate the most heat.

WARNING: This project requires great care and should not be attempted without adult supervision and without the necessary tools, care and safety procedures. We don’t recommend that you attempt this unless you really know what you are doing – and created this page more for general interest and learning purposes. Old televisions can contain dangerous voltages even after being unplugged and electronics skills are needed to test and discharge if needed. The cathode ray tube is also glass under vacuum and so could implode, causing flying fragments if badly handled. Also, the heat from the Fresnel lens could cause serious burns or damage to property very rapidly.
