In this awesome short video, Crazy Russian Hacker teaches how he has made an oil lamp from an old lightbulb. Note that this one requires safety consciousness – and adult supervision. It’s essential to use a tough leather glove to hold the bulb so that you don’t cut yourself when chipping out the old center of the lightbulb base.
This lamp does look cool but my criticism would be that it seems a bit easy to knock over. You could of course substitute the lightbulb for a jar with a flat base, and a metal lid with a small hole poked in. But then you would lose the clever and pretty effect of upcycling a lightbulb into something else that makes light. A lightbulb is also symbolic of an idea, so it’s a clever play. But please bear in mind – it’s super important to have some kind of safe holder for the lamp, when made, so that it doesn’t get knocked over. One tip for this would be to use a good sized tin filled with sand, and the bulb lamp can be set inside it.
In general it’s always a good idea to have lamps and candles set safely in a place where a) they are set sturdily in a way that they can’t be knocked over b) if they do get knocked over, they are inside something that will not burn – such as an earthenware or metal tray or pot and c) they are positioned away from fabrics or other flammable materials / fuels. In a still room, a candle two or three feet below a curtain might still set it on fire.
With regard to the wick, note that you will need a piece of rope made from natural twine, as opposed to nylon, polyester or other plasticized material. Nylon rope, when burned, releases toxic plastic fumes. Another tip – set the length of your wick correctly to adjust the size of your flame. Less wick showing = smaller flame.
With regard to the oil, you could use simple vegetable oil. Hey, it’s an awesome way to get rid of that evil cheap vegetable / canola oil that isn’t really ideal for eating anyway. 😉
