It is possible to ignite fire by simply using friction to generate sufficient heat. Rapidly rubbing solid combustible materials together, typically sticks, can create the desired effect. Creating fire in this manner takes skill, knowledge and most importantly, patient effort. The fire starting method showed in the video is called fire plough and it is one of the simplest (and most ancient) ways to start a fire.

Before you start rubbing the sticks together, have some tinder prepared. This is really important: Rubbing sticks on its own is likely only to produce a glowing ember and this is used to ignite tinder materials. Fine and “extremely dry” organic materials of various kinds make good tinder. Very fine wood shavings, dried grass, cattails, fatwood and specially prepared charred punkwood make good tinder.

First a groove is cut in the softwood board, then the tip of a rod made of harder wood is rubbed continually along the length of the grove. Over time, wood dust will be created which acts as tinder. Once the particles start to smoke and glow, add more tinder and then blow (not too hard) to increase the heat and cause flame to ignite.

This fire starting method can be used in hot as well as cold weather conditions. Once you are able to master this technique, you will be able to go through any survival situations.
