How To Build A Garden Shed – Roof Framing. Photo – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c6uliLIbS-I
Almost all homeowners need a little extra space to store garden tools, recycling bins, the lawn mower and other outdoor gear. Building a garden shed is one of the best ways to create additional storage space. Making the shed roof is the most difficult task when building your shed especially for those who have no experience in carpentry and wood work. This short video by Fine Gardening shows how to properly make the roof framing for your garden shed.
Before starting the project, you should first pick out the kind of roof style you want for your shed and the most common style is the gable shed roof because it is easiest to build. The measurements of the roof frame needs to be very specific and precise. Minor errors will negatively affect the entire structure so ask for help if you are a newbie in carpentry – or you can buy pre-made sheds that only need to be assembled or possibly installed on a foundation.
Three considerations when building a shed roof:
1. Roof pitch. One thing you never want to do when designing a gable roof is build one with a pitch lower than 3-12. This means that for every horizontal run of 12″, you need at least 3″ of rise.
2. Drip Edge and felt paper. Adding a drip edge to your roof will make your structure less prone to decay. Roofing paper / tar paper will further increase rain proofing and is highly advised. The shed may not be a livable space but you will want it to last as long as possible without having to do major repairs.
3. Hurricane ties. They are nailed on to the bottom of the rafter or truss and to the top wall plates. If heavy winds can damage a roof of a house, just think what it can do to a shed!
