Growing your own food is great—and you probably already know that. Home-grown vegetables and fruits typically taste better, they’re cheaper, they give you a sense of accomplishment, and they are readily available.

So how about some diversity? There are numerous fantastic food crops that are not part of the “normal set” everyone eats. In one of his entertaining videos, Mark from Self Sufficient Me mentions some of his favorite hard-to-get crops. They include:

1. Yacon: Sounds like a type of bacon, but it’s not. Sorry. 🙂 Yacon is a healthy, gut-friendly root vegetable from South America. It’s a natural sweetener that tastes like a pear but looks like a potato. However, it has a short shelf-life—making it unattractive for supermarkets.

2. Egyptian Spinach: This variety tastes similar to good ol’ spinach—only that it’s hardy and more resistant to unfavorable weather. But since regular spinach is already readily available, stores are not all that interested.

3. Finger Lime: This an Australian-native fruit that looks like caviar.

4. Cherry Guava

5. Jerusalem Artichokes: This sunflower-like plant has healthy root tubers that look like ginger or turmeric root. It makes for a tasty snack.

6. Colored Eggplants: Store-bought eggplants are characteristically dark-colored and big.

7. Tamarillo: Mark describes the tamarillo as a large tomato-like plant that has a fruity taste. It’s a versatile grower.

8. Mystic Dragon Fruit: The majestic dragon fruit is a naturally fat-free tropical fruit that is rich in antioxidants. But due to their hefty price, most people don’t bother buying them.

9. Bitter Gourds: The plant is easy to grow and nutritious. But as the name implies, it’s bitter!

10. Aztec Corn: This colorful corn is not as sweet as the common varieties but it’s regarded as healthier.
