We’re in an architectural age when the tiny house movement and minimalist living are trending. These cozy living spaces are great for anything from a private workplace to a holiday cabin or even a full-time off-grid home. But why? Well, tiny houses are considered lower impact for the environment, are more affordable than traditional housing and they appeal to people looking to downsize.
Living in a less than 300-square feet miniature structure is one thing; sprucing it up into an innovative and stylish living space is another. When you have limited square footage to work with, you need to balance functionality with charm – i.e., everything that takes up some real estate should be useful and eye-catching. This is precisely what Braelyn and James did while building their incredible DIY tiny house.
In the video hosted by Exploring Alternatives Youtube channel, the two artists narrate the thought process and challenges they faced building their 400-square feet (32-feet long) home. The motivation behind the project was a desire to break free from the rent cycle that was eliminating progress from their lives. The end-product is a house that is tiny in size, massive on charm and enables them to free themselves from the work-debt trap.
The interiors structure features overhanging greenery, a hand-painted stone floor, white surfaces (i.e., makes the rooms feel larger and airer), several mirrors, and archways—which are all design elements borrowed from the Mykonos Island in Greece. The house also has 2 king-sized lofts, 2 patio doors, a lounge area, a relatively spacious kitchen, a fridge, a bathtub, a composting toilet, and solar power supply.
The message from Braelyn and James is crystal clear; follow your dreams and find creative ways to do more with less.
