Building Without Nails – The Genius Of Japanese Carpentry. Photo – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rMtSc2MJLcw
This video is fairly long for us to include in our blog – more like a short documentary in fact – but it is well worth making an exception in this case. It contains some real gems of philosophy and great art. Hopefully these qualities will inspire modern generations to look beyond the consumerist values present in western society and to find that sustainable living ideas have been around for a very long time!
We only need to learn from those that have gone before us that life is often happier when it’s kept simple – it shouldn’t be so hard to learn to live without cheap, plastic and disposable things! The people featured in this short film reassure us that we don’t need to accept the latest lifestyle that is offered to us as desirable by those trying to sell more and more poor quality products.
The Japanese culture is absolutely fascinating and many of their arts and crafts still hold to the underlying principles of working with nature and striving to create extremely high quality, long-lasting items with a refined aesthetic beauty.
There is a great contrast between the craftsman’s workshop and its surroundings in New York City – the workshop is like an oasis of calm amid the frenzied activity of the city. It’s wonderful to see how the craftsmen in this video still uphold their traditional values – using local timber for all of their work and taking care to show the beauty of the wood at its best.
The furniture that features here is of the highest quality, with great simplicity in its design and use of materials. Not only are the timber joints in the Japanese temples made without any metal fixings, they last longer when made precisely and can even withstand earthquakes!
Amazingly, their wooden screens have no hardware and are made with the timber positioned in the same direction as the tree grew when it was alive – the result of this is that the wood doesn’t warp! Just one example of how working with nature makes sense.
