A greenhouse is every home gardener’s dream. Having a backyard greenhouse gives you the ideal environment to grow your favorite vegetables year-round. The only drawback is the rather hefty price tag of conventional greenhouses—particularly if you’re on a lean budget. Fortunately you can learn how to build a simple greenhouse from inexpensive materials – with the right know-how. And no, it doesn’t have to be fragile or complex!

If you’re up for the challenge, Mike Montgomery from Modern Builds has a full video tutorial on his lean to building a durable greenhouse, DIY-style. The structure is built entirely with 2×4’s and clear corrugated (polycarbonate) paneling — meaning that it’s sturdy enough to last you several growing seasons.

Based on his time-lapse video, here are some important things to consider when building a DIY greenhouse on your property:

• Pick a location that receives as much uninterrupted sunlight as possible. Also, take note of the sun’s orientation to get the longest stretch of daylight.

• Ensure you observe any applicable building codes and permits in your area.

• You can choose different frame material — but wood is best if you’re on a tight budget or less skilled in construction.

• Some common glazing options include glass, polycarbonate panels, fiberglass, and polythene sheeting. Mike went with polycarbonate panels because they strike a balance between affordability and durability. They’re easier to work with / safer than glass but more durable than polythene sheeting.

• Pay attention to temperatures. On hot summer days, open vents to expel hot air or drop shade cloths to reduce solar heat gain. When it’s cold, find ways warm the greenhouse.
