As a prepper, one of the most important parts of being adequately prepared for the worst-case scenario is having enough food to last several months. That is, you aim to have a steady supply of nutrient-rich food without the need to venture out often.
Long-term food storage on the cheap is an art form. Luckily, our friend the Canadian Prepper has top-notch knowledge on how to navigate this conundrum. Bulk dried staples are the key to this game.
Survival Food Budget Breakdown
Wholesale Pricing at the Time of the Video:
• 40lb of rice – $40
• 3 bags of oats – $20
• Chickpeas – $20
• Kidney beans – $20
Sure, for some the foods on this list are not exotic to the palate — but this is about staying alive when other food sources have run out. In old times many Asian communities practically survived on rice – and it can of course be mixed with whatever fresh foods can be foraged. Entertaining your taste buds becomes less important when you’re in survival mode. Caloric intake and the blend of nutrients are more important.

Buying the right foodstuff is only one part of the equation. You need to learn how to store food properly for long-term viability. Consider the following tips and how they apply to your situation:
- Get a couple of lidded food-grade buckets to store your food. They’re more durable, easier to stack, and they help keep away vermin.
- Line the inside with non-porous Mylar bags (Zip locked). Mylar is tougher than typical storage bags, it protects the food from light, and locks away odors.
- When filling the bags, leave some headspace to allow heat sealing.
- Toss an oxygen absorber (300cc or 2000cc depending on the size of the bucket/bag) into the Mylar bags.
- Run a household iron or a hair-straightening iron across the top of the bags—leaving a small space at one end.
- Use a vacuum to suck as much air as possible from the bags. Seal it all the way through and close the buckets tightly to create a vacuum seal.
Remember: Heat, light, time, oxygen, moisture and pests are the 6 main agents of food spoilage.
