15 Survival Uses For Zip Ties. Photo Β© NorGal β fotolia.com
Zip ties are useful little tools that can be used in any situation. Since 1958, we have been using them for countless tasks from securing things in place to organizing and repairing. Here are 15 handy survival uses for zip ties that you may not have thought of:
1. Organize small items – You can use zip ties to organize small items in your bug out bag such as sticks, cordage, pens or markers, utensils, etc.
2. Save space – Roll up your clothes and blankets as tightly as you can and secure them with a zip tie to save space in your pack.
3. Bag handles – Bags are much easier to carry if they have a handle attached to them but what if the handle breaks off? Take a long zip tie, place it through a loop on your bag, and then cinch it to the length you want it.
4. Attach gear to your bag – If you want a quick access to your flashlight, knife or some other tool that has a holster, use a zip tie to attach the holster to your bag so you can get your tool without having to dig through all your things.
5. Makeshift shoe laces – Zip ties can be used to secure your shoes if anything ever happens to your shoelaces.
6. Extra traction on snow – If you are walking on icy or snowy terrain, you can attach two or three zip ties around each of your boots so they have a better grip on the ice, giving you more stability.
7. Securing makeshift trouser gaiters – If you are out in a marshland, you will want to keep your trousers dry and stop them from flapping around and potentially getting snagged on a branch. Wrap up the trouser leg near the bottom and hold it in place with a zip tie.
8. Trail markers – When hiking in an unfamiliar environment, tie or hang a zip tie around a branch to mark your trail.
9. Shelter Making – If you have no cordage, you can use your long zip ties to tie your shelter together.
10. Hanging things – If you’re on your shelter and need to hang things from the roof or a tree branch, it’s not always necessary to use paracord because zip ties will work just fine.
11. Snares – Rather than using ropes to build snares, you can use zip ties because they are naturally more secure.
12. Repair gear – Zip ties are great for simple repairs like a broken strap on a backpack or a large tear on your tent.
13. Restraining device – In certain situations, you may need to restrain individuals and zip ties are ideal to use. The advantage to using zip ties is that very few people know how to escape them.
14. Splints – You can use zip ties, together with anything long, strong and straight you have at your disposal, to splint a broken arm or leg. Place the splints either side of the injured part, wrap around the zip ties at each end then cinch down tight to secure.
15. Hold bandages in place – When you have a wound or a cut that needs to be bandaged, you can easily secure the bandages with a couple of medium sized zip ties.
