You never know when the power will go out, and this video by DaveHax shows you 5 simple ways to make a candle, should you ever need one, and ready-made candles are unavailable.
The first kind of candle can be made using the wax cover of Edam cheese and a small piece of newspaper. The newspaper will serve as the wick, and all you have to do is roll the wax paper over it, and your candle is ready for lighting.
Wax wrappers of cheese like Edam are typically made from paraffin wax, which is also the kind of wax used to create candles. This is the reason why this trick is just as effective.
Another kind of emergency candle uses a block of butter. Simply poke a hole in the middle of the butter and place the cotton stick inside.
Butter is just as effective as a candle because it works the same way a candle does. When the fire melts the butter, it seeps into the wick and the liquid becomes the fuel for the flame.
The next emergency candle can be achieved with a can of tuna in sunflower oil. Poke a hole in the middle of the can, insert a cotton wick, and you already have something to use as light source, should a black out ever strike. The best part is that the tuna remains edible even after you use it as a candle (though of course, it needs to be eaten up promptly as it is no longer sealed). With this self-made candle, it is the oil that fuels the wick.
Now, if you do not have any of the above materials, you can check your child’s school supplies for a wax coloring crayon. No wick needed. You just have to light the tip and patiently wait until it starts to flame. Again, this works because of the wax component of the crayon.
The last emergency candle life hack is probably the most fun candle, and it is also the personal favorite of the creator of the video.
All you need is an orange. You just have to cut up the skin of the fruit in a circle around the center, and then slowly take out the fruit, until you have a hollow half of the fruit’s skin. You have to make sure that the stem-like portion in the middle of the fruit is left intact, as it will serve as the wick for this candle.
When it’s ready, you have to put in any type of oil (vegetable, olive, etc.), making sure to soak the wick, without entirely covering it. Presto! You have a fun and stylish candle. You can put it in a bowl of water and use it as a center piece on your next romantic date; or as centerpiece for that calm night with family and friends.
These emergency candles are not only useful, but are also fun to make. Just make sure that you use these candles with the correct concern for fire safety.
