This tutorial will give you a fantastic introduction to the idea of Forest Gardening! – it’s packed full of knowledge and practical advice for anyone new to the subject and will provide further inspiration to those who already have an interest or have started to practice it.

Forest gardening (or Agroforestry) is an ancient practice – it originated as a means of encouraging more food and medicinal plants to grow close to human settlements. Making a garden in this way requires us to understand how the natural ecosystem works, the complex ways of nature can take time to learn but it is a very worthwhile and important study – we can use this knowledge to tap into the abundance of food and medicines that nature can provide. In essence, it is a well-directed attempt to re-create a portion of the Garden of Eden!

Many of the problems of modern life are down to the destructive actions of humans – it is difficult for us to find ways to redress the balance for the survival of future generations or to repair the damage we have caused. Simply by remembering that the earth we live on gives us all that we need, our actions will move in a more constructive direction – in other words, when we become more willing to learn from nature, we will have more of its power on our side – at the end of the day, this could mean a lot less wasted effort and a better quality of life all round.

Before the growth of modern humans, the great majority of temperate and tropical areas were covered in natural forests, which supported a great diversity of life forms as well as fulfilling the needs of our ancestors. Creating a forest garden is a truly sustainable choice – it follows the strongest inclination of nature by copying the forest ecosystem in its design.

It’s imperative in modern times that humanity finds a way to support its ever-growing population and to many of us it’s clear that a radical change of direction is needed! – The “edible” forest looks like the perfect way forward because it can supply a wide variety and large amount of food in a relatively small area, while maintaining the health of the land.

Anyway, I guess you’ve noticed that I could eulogize this subject all day! It’s great to see that the concept of the Forest Garden is spreading all the time – this is hope for the future and a cause to celebrate!

I’m confused. The first paragraph says that this tutorial is “packed full of knowledge and practical advice for anyone new to the subject” of forest gardening. Is there a link that I’m missing to page 2 that contains the practical advice?
