In this inspiring video by Living Big In A Tiny House Youtube channel we a woodworker applying her skills to the challenge of building a beautiful and highly functional tiny home on wheels.
The footprint is 2.4 metres x 4.8 and 2.8m tall. (approx 8 foot by 16 and 8.5 feet high) and is built using western red cedar that was locally sourced. The high ceiling facilitates a generous loft space which is less claustrophobic than some of the typical tiny house lofts that are seen.
The home makes extensive use of recycled / reclaimed timber, has a water supply that is fed from a spring, and has a photovoltaic solar power system.
Interestingly we learn that she is in the UK which has far fewer tiny house builders than for example the USA. The UK has quite strict rules with regard to planning. You can’t just buy your own plot of land and build your own home like you can in many other countries, because you probably won’t get planning permission. A tiny home on wheels (as far as I know, I am not a lawyer!) counts as a mobile home and therefore is governed by different laws, being not fixed it doesn’t require a planning permit. As I said, as far as I know – you must of course do your own research and get your own advice in this area.
In typical fashion we see the stairs in the tiny home are combined with storage space underneath – though absolute care is needed because there is no stair rail and the stairs have a shiny wooden surface.
The bathroom features a deep bath that was sourced form an old canal boat – and I was impressed by the home-made rainfall shower which was made from an array of copper pipes with small holes drilled in them!
We learn that the overall cost of this stylish tiny home was around £15,000 – including the cost of the solar power system! Considering the fact that renting a private place of your own in the UK would probably cost close to £1,000 per month, depending on which area you are in (perhaps more!), this home will pay for itself in saved housing costs within two years for sure. I’m not sure whether she has to pay a rent for her space that she is staying on her friends’ farm but we can see that this is in the end a very cost-effective as well as wholesome way to live.
