This video demonstrating how to start a fire using a lemon went viral. The clip was uploaded by Swedish YouTuber NorthSurvival and has been viewed more than 24 million times!

Ready for a quick lesson in electrochemical reactions and circuitry? To replicate what NorthSurvival did, you need one lemon, six copper fasteners, six zinc nails, a piece of wire, wire cutter, and steel wool. Please be reminded that fire is a dangerous element, so please do not use this tutorial for anything that is unsafe.

Here are the step-by-step instructions on how to experiment with the tangy fruit:

1. Roll the lemon in your palms, so it gets loosened up.
2. Insert the copper fasteners into the fruit. Keep the fasteners about a centimeter apart from each other.
3. Put the zinc nails into the lemon, about an inch away from the copper brads. The nails should be in the same alignment as the fasteners.
4. Five of the six copper brads are then connected to five of the zinc nails using a wire. The final brad and nail will be used as the “battery terminals”.
5. Place the steel wool on the ground. Use toilet paper, small sticks, dry grass or shaved bark as dry tinder.
6. Place the terminal wires on the steel wool to complete the circuit. This will heat the steel to red hot and will catch your tinder on fire.

Lemon and thus lemon juice are good electrolytes, making the yellow fruit a perfect fire starter. This process is how batteries generate electricity. Batteries act as storage for chemical energy. Electricity is produced when two electrodes are placed in a liquid electrolyte and connected by a conductive material.

This McGyver trick can be easily done if you exercise appropriate caution. You should always be careful around flames and electricity. So, the next time you go camping in the woods and run out of matches, take these materials with you to create a lemon-powered fire that will warm your nights under the stars and allow you to cook your favorite campfire recipes.
