Biochar is a type of charcoal used in organic farming. It is created by burning wood or brush with restricted oxygen, which causes the organic matter to smoulder until chunks of charcoal are formed, combusting “incompletely”. The fire is then extinguished before the charcoal turns to ash. Biochar alone has little nutritive value to plants but when combined with organic fertilisers and compost, it greatly benefits plant growth. It turns out that biochar supports diverse microorganisms and retain nutrient minerals which might be washed away by rains otherwise.

Biochar is thus used as a soil improver. This is a 3,000 year-old technique that was used in the Amazon rainforests. It has been found that the ancient soils that were improved using biochar are still remarkably fertile even after centuries of heavy rainfall.

Biochar has also found support because it sequesters carbon, and large scale biochar deployment could offset very significant CO2 emissions.

If you are planning to make biochar, make sure to do the following first:

1. Have a water source both for safety and for quenching the char.
2. Prepare several shovels and rakes for spreading and cooling the char when it’s done.
3. Wear leather gloves and cotton or wool clothing that won’t melt.
4. Make sure to use dry wood because it is not very efficient to use wood that is more than 20% moisture.
