Some of us were lucky enough as children to have the opportunity to play in the woods and build our own shelters, but as we grew up there was plenty else to distract us. Spending some leisure time doing this stuff can be very satisfying because it fulfils one of our most basic instincts – and you never know, one day it might even prove to be essential to our survival.
Bushcraft and survival skills are generally a male-dominated subject so it’s really refreshing to see a young woman at work in this video, building herself a sturdy and warm shelter using just a couple of hand tools and some basic materials – her confidence is really inspiring!
Survival Lilly has put together a series of these videos, showing all of the construction techniques and explaining the specific functions of every part of her shelter.
The Super Shelter, originally designed by Mors Kochansky, is one great idea that I haven’t come across before. It has been developed from experience of surviving in the sub-arctic and Canadian Boreal forest so it’s perfect for use in very cold temperatures – the raised bed platform reduces the chance of critters getting into your bed at night and the area below the platform acts as a cold sink at the same time.
Lilly creates her very own, with its miniature “greenhouse effect” provided by a clear plastic sheet! This means she’ll be able to keep as warm as possible on cold winter nights, without having to breathe smoke from the fire. I reckon it would be easy enough to add more firewood without even getting out of bed!
