1. Sassafras: The roots of the sassafras plant are responsible for the predominant flavor that you associate with root beer. It grows wildly in Eastern USA states, which is where Andy went to forage the plant with the help of Lisa Rose. (Disclaimer: The FDA classifies safrole in sassafras as a mild hepatocarcinogen based on studies on mice — but recent studies point to a different effect on humans).

2. Maple Syrup: To sweeten his root beer, Andy turned to maple syrup—drilling holes and collecting sap right from the barks of maple trees.

3. Yeast: What is root beer without foam? The beverage is carbonated by a yeast colony that Andy acquires from the Fair State Brewing Company.

4. Milk for Ice Cream: From milking goats to making ice cream, Andy does everything from scratch by visiting different experts.

This goes to show that you can easily make some of your favorite beverages or foods in the controlled environment that is your home.
