Growing plants in coconut husk, rock wool, or gravel with added nutrients but without soil (i.e., hydroponics) primarily equates to three things: first, the water stays in the system and can be reused; second, nutrition levels in general can be controlled; and third, you can reasonably expect high yield and ease in harvesting. But it won’t be always sunny days for those who practice hydroponics. Soil acts a buffer, and its absence may mean the speedy death of your plant, should there be glitches in your hydroponics system. This method of growing plants also entails regular flushing of the system, which in turn may result in some waste disposal concerns. If you are thinking of adapting hydroponics, expect to shell out some bucks from your wallet too for the somewhat pricey nutrients to feed the plants, as well as pumps, reservoirs and so on.

You may be interested in aquaculture too, or farming fish, shrimp, or other aquatic organisms under controlled conditions. Just anticipate, however, the excess nutrients that need to be eliminated from the tank. Aquaculturists typically resolve this issue by removing a percentage of water on a daily basis, but with all the things that you need to attend to every day, this practice may become difficult to strictly follow.

Both hydroponics and aquaculture are efficient means of producing a bounty of veggies and fish, respectively – however something amazing happens when you combine the two, resulting in an astonishing symbiosis: The nutrient-dense yet excretion-rich water that must be disposed of from the fish tank to prevent toxicity can be fed into the plants’ grow beds (or hydroponic system) where by-products can be converted to nitrates and nitrites. Once the water has been cleansed by the plants’ roots that filter out the toxic ammonia, this is being returned to the fish tank (or aquaculture system). So your fish enjoy a tank filled with fresh, nontoxic, and clean water, while the plants get an adequate amount of nutrients for their growth. Such is the basic idea behind “aquaponics” – getting the best of both worlds through a true miniature ecosystem!

To learn more about aquaponics, we are sharing an informative and helpful Backyard Aquaponics video by KirstenDirksen on farming fish with vegetables. In this video, Rob Torcellini tours us around his 10-by-12-foot aquaponics greenhouse, which he just built mostly out of scavenged parts. Enjoy!

It's already begun. Ask the farmers in California. They know.

Every survivalist knows that water is of critical importance. You NEED an independent water source that you can count on!

As an interesting "survival rehearsal" - imagine that you turned the tap on right now and nothing came out. How long would you last?

But what if there was another water source literally hidden in plain sight. That's right, I'm talking about the atmosphere!

The amazing thing about getting water from the natural moisture in the air... is that it is ALWAYS available.

This gives you real water security!

What Tinnitus Does To Your Brain Cells (And How To Stop It)

After 47 years of studies and countless brain scans done on more than 2,400 tinnitus patients, scientists at the MIT Institute found that in a shocking 96% of cases, tinnitus was actually shrinking their brain cells.

As it turns out, tinnitus and brain health are strongly linked.

Even more interesting: The reason why top army officials are not deaf after decades of hearing machine guns, bombs going off and helicopter noises...

Is because they are using something called "the wire method", a simple protocol inspired by a classified surgery on deaf people from the 1950s...

Lost Ways Of Survival Video

An amazing discovery in an abandoned house in Austin, Texas: A lost book of amazing survival knowledge, believed to have been long vanished to history, has been found in a dusty drawer in the house which belonged to a guy named Claude Davis.

Remember... back in those days, there was no electricity... no refrigerators... no law enforcement... and certainly no grocery store or supermarkets... Some of these exceptional skills are hundreds of years of old and they were learned the hard way by the early pioneers.

We've lost to history so much survival knowledge that we've become clueless compared to what our great grandfathers did or built on a daily basis to sustain their families.

Neighbors said that for the last couple of years Claude has tried to unearth and learn the forgotten ways of our great-grandparents and claimed to have found a secret of gargantuan proportions. A secret that he is about to reveal together with 3 old teachings that will change everything you think you know about preparedness:

  1. Great idea. Have you given any thought to using food fish such as bass or crappie? Not only would you be farming plants, but you would have a fresh supply of fish.

  2. Would catfish be also an ideal fish, in conjunction with trout or tilapia for aquaponics?

  3. How much KWh does it use per month to work. We are off grid and do not want to have to invest in more arrays to cover something like this.
    Thank you.

  4. I love your concept, it is really unique. I really appreciated you for this quality work.
