As a prepper, you should always be prepared (it’s in the name). But for obvious reasons, you need to be wise about what you hoard. According to the Sensible Prepper, here’s what you must have in your ‘prepper inventory’:

1. Toilet Paper: During a grid-down scenario when stores are inaccessible, you don’t want to run out of toiletries. Take cues from the rush that followed the COVID-19 outbreak in the US.

2. Duct Tape: Duct tape is useful when you need to patch gear, hem clothes, or attend to medical needs, among other uses in a crisis.

3. Lighters and Matches: You need a way to cook and power up traditional light sources (e.g., lanterns)—and this where matches/lighters come in.

4. Batteries: Having a portable source of power to run your ham radio, flashlights, and other appliances is indispensable.

5. Flashlights: Flashlights serve a wide variety of purposes—including convenience when on the move and security (Tip: Consider more energy-efficient LED flashlights).

6. Candles: For household use, candles are a great alternative to flashlights – i.e., they’re inexpensive, lightweight, and they can light up for several hours.

7. Unscented Bleach: From washing dishes, clothes, disinfecting surface, and even filtering water, unscented bleach has a ton of uses.

8. Plastic Bags: Plastic bags have multiple uses such as storing food, getting rid of waste, preventing leaks, and protecting sensitive items from the elements. Note – never use scented trash bags to store food or water.

9. Tarps: Their applications include sealing damage house parts, a makeshift car window, building a shelter, etc.

10. Socks: Socks are an often-overlooked prepper item – but important nonetheless. They keep your feet warm, dry and protected from injury.

11. Salt: There’s a reason salt was one of the most sought-after commodities and trade items in the olden days. It has nutritional value in addition to having countless uses – from food preservation to medical sterilization (saline).

12. Seeds: Growing your own food is crucial to long-term survival.

13. Refillable Lantern (Wicks and Oil): It may be old school, but it can be a lifesaver during prolonged power outages.

14. Propane: Having some type of fuel to quickly cook your meals is important.

15. Cords: Cordage is a staple in every prepper’s kit — and for good reason.

16. Medical Supplies: Having a well-stocked first aid kit is a no-brainer for any prepper.
