Short synopsis: Dow Chemical is seeking approval for new strains of genetically engineered crops that are resistant to 2,4-D weedkiller. FULL STORY: Dow chemical’s new 2,4-D resistant genetically engineered crops are intended as an alternative to “Roundup Ready” crops, which have become less productive due to the increasing prevalence of roundup-resistant weeds. In a cycle similar in principle to that of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, plants can develop resistance to toxic chemicals over time. Are we now entering a cycle of use of ever-stronger chemicals in an attempt to maintain the dominance of this highly unnatural and toxic form of agriculture?

If the new GMO crops are approved, use of 2,4-D is estimated to increase manyfold in the USA. The agricultural landscape will be blanketed in this killer chemical, with only the mutant plant strains able to survive. In addition to the total destruction of biodiversity caused by this… the surviving plants will end up IN YOUR FOOD.

The Legacy Of Agent Orange:

In what was arguably one of the most heinous, despicable acts of warfare ever conducted, USA forces dumped somewhere over 10,000,000 US gallons of Agent Orange on Vietnam from 1961 to 1971 – blanketing the landscape in a 50/50 mixture of 2,4-D and 2,4,5-T, disfiguring and destroying millions of acres of previously lush, green, pure land. By 1971, 12 percent of the total area of South Vietnam had been sprayed with defoliating chemicals, at an average concentration of 13 times the recommended USDA application rate for domestic use.

Despite the fact that chemical warfare is strictly outlawed by the Geneva Protocol, Agent Orange was used under the justification that it was “intended” to kill nothing but plants. However the Agent Orange was contaminated with extremely toxic Dioxins – which caused hundreds of thousands of deaths. The dioxins continue to pollute Vietnam even now, over 40 years later.

The Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs estimated 400,000 people were killed or maimed, and 500,000 children were born with birth defects as a result of the use of batches of the herbicide that were contaminated with dioxins. ^[1] The Red Cross of Vietnam estimates that up to 1 million people are disabled or have health problems due to contaminated Agent Orange. Additionally a large number of US Veterans suffered serious adverse health effects, claimed to be the result of Agent Orange exposure.

Also – as a result of the destruction of millions of acres of agricultural land, famine also left hundreds of thousands of people malnourished or starving.

Even worse – it’s not over: The contaminated soil and sediment continue to affect the citizens of Vietnam, poisoning their food chain and causing illnesses, serious skin diseases and a variety of cancers in the lungs, larynx, and prostate. Dioxin levels are still so high that in 2010 there was talk of evacuating contaminated areas – over a quarter of a century after the spraying stopped. ^[4] The people go on attempting to make the best of their ruined lives – lives that have been destroyed by Agent Orange.

2,4-D And Dioxins Explained:

2,4-D is one of the world’s most commonly used weedkillers. It is claimed that it is safe because it breaks down rapidly. Higher reaction temperatures and alkaline conditions during the manufacture of 2,4-D increase the formation of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin (CDD) by-products (dioxins). ^[3] Dioxins are highly toxic, even in trace amounts – and do not break down rapidly. They may persist for many years as we have seen.

It was these dioxins that are considered the culprits for the toxic effects in Vietnam – but it has been assumed that because of much improved manufacturing processes since the old days, that there were no longer any dangerous dioxins in 2,4-D these days. However, a July 2013 Four Corners investigation found “elevated levels” of dangerous dioxins in a generic version of 2,4-D. One scientist said the product tested by Four Corners, which was imported from China, had “one of the highest dioxin readings for 2,4-D in the last 10 to 20 years, and could pose potential health risks.” ^[2]

Part of the problem is that dioxins are so incredibly toxic that tiny amounts of contamination are all that is required. It is difficult to detect them. The chlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (CDDs) are present in 2,4-D only in trace amounts which are difficult to separate and identify. ^[3]

Even if just one dioxin-contaminated batch of 2,4-D made it onto American fields, the results could be disastrous. And we already know that this stuff is made as cheaply as possible in China… is it really worth the risk? But let’s assume that all of the modern 2,4-D is “made properly” and there is no dioxin contamination. Even then, do you really want to eat GMO food that has been doused in this stuff? Can’t we just grow food the way we evolved to eat it – the natural way?

Chemical Companies Get Rich And Don’t Care:
Agent Orange was manufactured for the U.S. Department of Defense primarily by Monsanto Corporation and Dow Chemical. Millions of people, plants and animals suffered hideously in Vietnam – that is undeniable. But guess what? The chemical companies got rich. Oh, yes they did. They got nice and fat from their government contracts and as far as they are concerned, it is not their problem. The corporations attempted to put the blame on the US Government.

They have even gone so far as to deny altogether that Agent Orange caused long term heath effects in Vietnam! In 2004, a Monsanto spokesperson stated (get ready for this) that Monsanto should not be liable at all for injuries or deaths caused by Agent Orange, saying: “We are sympathetic with people who believe they have been injured and understand their concern to find the cause, but reliable scientific evidence indicates that Agent Orange is not the cause of serious long-term health effects.” ^[5]

Is this the same type of “reliable scientific evidence” on which they base their claims that GMO crops are safe?? Where is the independent evaluation?

Now, Dow Chemical has a plan to get even richer from the dumping of millions more gallons of “safe” 2,4-D on the USA. From the golden hills of California to the wind-swept plains of the Mid-west, from North to South and beyond. Nature, your beautiful country – soil, water and air, animals and plants – obliterated under a storm of weedkiller, with only their mutant “plants” growing successfully in the fields.

And then even more money for them – it’s a double payout because it’s their chemicals and their seed! The mutant plants grown from their seed are used for foodstuffs – and under current labeling laws, you will not even have the right to know whether you are eating the mutant plants or not!

Not even the Dark Lord Sauron could have concocted a darker, fouler scheme from the pit of his insane mind.

This hideous madness is their idea of agriculture. But it is NOT agriculture. It is Agribusiness. And Dow Chemical – according to the Center For Food Safety’s report here, has a long history of denial and obfuscation regarding the safety of its chemicals.

Here’s the point: Their objective is to make and sell as much of their chemicals and GMO seeds as they possibly can. They want a firm control of agribusiness. They will wheel and deal and do whatever they can to make money. They will use their financial muscle to ram their agenda through. And if a chemical gets banned? They will bring out another one and carry on.

Geneva Protocol? Now, they are ready to dump millions more gallons of their trusty war chemical 2,4-D not on the fields of Vietnam, but on the United States of America.

I don’t use the term “War Chemical” lightly: 2,4-D was co-discovered independently in both the US and the UK in 1941. In both cases the researchers were part of a clandestine wartime effort by their governments, to create chemical warfare agents for use in WWII. ^[3]

2,4-D’s ability to kill weeds was an accidental discovery and not the aim of the research in either country! Because of war-time defense security reasons as well as for international legal reasons, research of this sort was never done openly. Research, production and use of chemical warfare agents were illegal actions under the Geneva Protocol and many other international treaties signed by both the USA and the UK. This meant that a plausible cover story was needed to hide the actual nature of any chemical warfare research. For both the Allies and the Axis powers, the civilian label of agricultural was often used to conceal illegal and/or secret chemical warfare research. ^[3]

The same companies were making war chemicals and hiding them under the guise of agriculture.

You might argue that they are at the same old game. And they get rich whoever wins. Through an unspeakable twist of horror, men of one nation were pitted against men of another nation while the corporate forces behind the scenes got richer, fatter and more powerful. While the marionettes acted out the play, the real game took place behind the curtain. As it always does with warfare. For as Sun-Tzu, writer of the ancient “Art of War” said – “All warfare is based on deception”. And so it is.

Men who thought they were defending their nation were in fact further enriching the corporatist forces that now move closer than ever towards their end game – an unspeakable tyranny of enslavement of nature.
