Homesteading is a lifestyle of self-sufficiency. Although many think of it as exclusively a country pursuit, it is not defined by where someone lives, such as the city or the country, but by the lifestyle choices they make. Today, more people are choosing this type of lifestyle for themselves and their families and they do it because they desire something different than the usual 9-5 daily grind!

Keep in mind that homesteading is not an easy life. It takes a lot of commitment and labor to make it a success. There will always be setbacks but the rewards of homesteading will definitely outweigh the risks involved.

Here are 6 simple tips:

1. Commit To A “Permanent” Location And Develop A Long-Term Plan. Start by focusing on survival and sustenance. There are seven main points to check in order to achieve a self-sufficient living: water, shelter, food, energy, finances, health and community. The spheres you decide to work on first will be based on your situation, skills and finances.

2. Avoid / Get Out Of Debt. Debt creates a financial burden that can cause problems for self-sufficiency – as income may be lower and less reliable than with a typical career-based lifestyle. Additionally, owning the property outright reduces the risk of problems down the road.

3. Learn How To Preserve And Store Food and do so whenever possible to keep your pantry full. Canning, dehydrating and freezing are all vital homesteading skills. If there is a genuine financial emergency, a well-stocked pantry may be more valuable than money so keep yourself and your family well prepared for any emergencies with food in the pantry.

4. Build Community. In hard times, communities pull together and so it’s worth the investment in building positive relationships. In such a local system, people will exchange goods and services, share skills and look out for each other. Even something as simple as keeping an eye out and notifying your neighbours if you spot something that would be in their best interests to know, can go a long way.

5. Adopt A Positive Attitude. In many cases it is our state of mind that determines the course of events. Learning to appreciate and be content with what we have, while working practically towards making things better, gives a positive outlook and makes life more fulfilling.

6. Simplify Your Life. Sustainability means unplugging from the “latest and greatest” and adjusting to a more natural way of being. Most of us burden ourselves with a mountain of “stuff” and we can make life easier by unburdening ourselves. Downsizing brings reduced financial burden, eliminating the expensive and the unnecessary.
