In this inspiring and meditative video by Kusk Bushcraft, we see a man choose a spot in the cold forest to set up his camp. Using a home-made bow saw, he selects some fallen timbers and cuts the pieces he needs. His saw also doubles up as a measuring device. Using a small axe, he knocks off the small twigs from his poles.
The axe also doubles up as a mallet by flipping it over and using the back edge. This is a man who understands how to use one tool for more than one purpose – a key bushcraft skill which enables a lighter pack.
Once the camp bed is made, he rests several long poles together to form a teepee shape, tied at the top with what looks like 550 paracord.
After that, a dense layer of small twigs and brush is added over the top, forming a roof that will retain warmth and keep some rain out. Next, moss is collected, taking care to pick up large chunks intact. This shelter is going to blend into the forest very well and if you were more than 50 yards away, you might walk right past it without noticing it is even there! The shelter is done!
Finally a fire pit is kicked out, exposing the bare dirt. A wall of logs is put behind it in order to reflect more of the heat back towards the shelter. It’s getting really dark and it’s a welcome relief when the first flame of the fire catches light. Kettle on the boil, cast iron pan with sizzling bacon strips, bread rolls. Winter or not – the man’s living like a King if you ask me! 🙂
Dawn breaks. The fire is revived from the still-glowing embers. What’s the plan for the day? We’re left wondering what the bright new day has in store. This is a very calming video that will inspire you to ‘unplug’. I feel way more relaxed just for watching it.
