If you like making simple low-tech gadgets, this project is pure genius and looks like fun to put together! A few basic tools and some low cost equipment will enable you to use a USB socket to power your own desktop air conditioner – USB outputs have a built-in power supply of 5 volts, which can be used to connect a wide variety of small devices – the possibilities are endless!

If you’re suffering from the heat, using a small efficient air conditioning unit like this one will keep you comfortable without having to cool the whole house! Here at off-grid, we’re always looking for smart new ways to save the planet by minimizing our use of resources – home air conditioning is costly to run so by using a small device some of the time you’ll save on electricity bills in the process.

A home air conditioning unit uses a lot of power and in a recent survey it was shown that 87% of homes (nearly 100 million!) in the US have one – this amounts to a huge consumption of energy! If we can work to reduce this power usage, it will have a beneficial effect for our pockets and the environment. Your air conditioner can be made more efficient by regular cleaning and maintenance – an old system is likely to be inefficient and costly to run.

The size, design and materials used in a building are the largest factors in its energy use – thicker walls, double glazing and better insulation all make a big difference by keeping a property cooler in summer and warmer in winter. This is often overlooked when we choose where to live – the cost of running an inefficient house can be crippling to anyone living on a tight budget.

The featured project is a simple technology called a heat exchanger. Heating or air-conditioning costs can be greatly reduced by pre-heating, or cooling, incoming air using an underground water tank that remains at a constant temperature – this geothermal energy is tapped with a “ground source heat pump”, which is much more efficient than an air source pump (such as an air-conditioning unit). Finland is a leader in developing these systems.

Geothermal systems are currently quite expensive so would be seen a long term investment, but once installed the savings are considerable – it’s well worth looking at if you’re building your own home. It may also be possible in some areas to obtain a grant or tax credit for installing renewable energy.
