This short video gives a step-by-step guide to the materials and methods needed to construct a simple fire pit in your yard. There’s no need for cement in this design so the fire pit is quick to make and could be moved easily to another part of the garden if necessary.

Building a fire pit close to your house will give you a focal point to meet with friends and enjoy the outdoor life. It will open up all sorts of possibilities for you to use your outside space during more months of the year and it could encourage regular cooking outside – food always seems to taste best when cooked on an open fire!

Sitting around a fire is something humans have been doing for many thousands of years and you’ll soon find that it’s a really good way to relax and let go of stress. For indigenous peoples across the world, a fire is a necessary part of life – it gives protection from wild animals when sleeping outside and is used for cooking and boiling water for safe drinking.

Many of us have lost touch with the connection that brings us into regular contact with the elements – the technology in our lives has replaced this with electronics and machinery – it is an important part of the experience of life to spend some time with these elements, it helps us to feel part of the earth and to keep our feet on the ground.

Now you have an easy method to make your own fire pit, be sure to find a source of dry, dead wood for the best fires. Timber that is dry will give off far less smoke so it’s a good idea to have a covered area set aside for storing and drying your wood before using it. Avoid burning trash like plastics and painted or treated timber as they can give off toxic fumes and won’t smell good either! A small fire can also give you a secure, quick way to dispose of unwanted documents without using a shredder.

The site of your fire is important – make sure that it is well away from low tree branches and preferably with clear, open ground around it. When the fire pit is not in use and cooled down it’s good to keep it covered so that it is dry and easy to light up next time – you could even lay a fire and cover it so that it’s ready to go whenever the mood takes you!
