We discovered a great list that will help you to reduce the amount of your trash that is sent to landfill! The link follows after our introduction to the topic. Composting is widely practiced these days and it really is surprising to find out just how much of our household waste can be turned into beneficial compost for the garden! Large scale composting for agriculture also reduces the need for chemical fertilizers.

Did you know that around half of all food that is produced in the US goes to waste? – Minimizing your food waste saves unnecessary production and food waste in landfill creates methane gas that contributes to global warming. Many cities are starting to implement composting schemes and there are plans in New York to build a plant to harness this “biogas” for fuel – this is a tried and tested method.

If we’re keen to reduce our use of resources and the amount of trash we produce, as well as looking for ways to recycle at home and to compost more waste, it’s good to think about the products that we buy when we’re in the stores. It is impossible to recycle some of the common packaging plastics so try to choose products with less packaging, paper instead of plastic or loose items without unnecessary wrappers or cartons and use your own shopping bags. If we all do this more, we’ll support producers that save packaging and more often than not we will be getting more for our money by avoiding products with a lot of hidden empty space too!

There are some great ideas here but a few of them need further clarification. Dairy and cooked foods can definitely attract rodents and other animals so it may be better to avoid them – if you do compost them, make sure that your compost bin is secure or its contents could end up being spread around the yard! Rodents could also chew holes in your compost bin to reach the cooked food. Wood ash adds valuable minerals but make sure that it is clean – ash from burning coal or other materials is not suitable.

There is some concern about the toxins that are present in some printing ink – manufacturers are working to improve this situation by using fewer toxic metals like zinc or copper and more vegetable based inks rather than those with petroleum based chemicals. Having said this, it is still important to avoid composting glossy, waxed or coloured paper and card, especially if you add compost to areas where you grow food crops. It is also recommended in an urban environment that you test your soil for heavy metals and don’t grow food crops within 10 feet of a building.
