Lives can be turned upside down by disasters and the first few hours after it strikes are crucial. You might think you are ready for emergencies but having the right survival gear and training isn’t the whole picture because you have to have a plan and know how to execute it. Here are the 9 things to do during an emergency.

1. Assess The Current Situation – Make sure you get in touch with your neighbors because this could be essential for figuring out what’s going on and assisting each other.

2. Gather Gear And Personnel For Movement – If you’re already at your designated primary rally point, perhaps (ideally) in a survival shelter or panic room, but for many people simply in your house, the best thing to do is immediately fill your tubs, sinks, pots, and other containers with water because that pressure probably won’t hold for long. Your plan may involve moving out at some point though so make sure your bug out bags are prepared ahead.

3. Relocate To Your Primary Rally Point If Not Already There – Plan your bug out routes ahead to make it all easier. It pays to have a “reserve” or secondary ralling point established in case the first is not useable. In a disaster scenario it could be under evacuation orders or pose an imminent risk so plan ahead. More than one rallying point reduces your risk.

4. Set Up Security – Once you’ve arrived, you’ll need to take precautions against people (or animals) who could be considered dangerous. Quickly set up basic defenses and then you can work on improving those defenses when you have more time, later.

5. Assess Your Supplies – Once you have defenses set up you can assess your supplies, figuring out how much of various essentials you have on hand and what you can make use of in the immediate vicinity.

6. Set Up Your Emergency Communications – Set up an emergency communications plan with your family or team in advance and train with it. Essentially, that means you’ll have to have more than one means of communication – and these should not be entirely electronics dependent so as to provide backup in case of EMP.

7. Gather Everyone Together – Once you have established communications with everyone on your team, you need to gather everyone together if possible. This means either you will have to go to them or they will have to come to you. Good decision making will be needed here.

8. Monitor The Frequencies – Monitor the frequencies across the spectrum and gain intel on the developing situation.

9. Decide Your Course Of Action – When you finally got everyone together, you need to make plans. Do you stay put or or do you bug out to another location? Each scenario is different and will need to be assessed as it unfolds.
