You can use dish soap in a variety of ways other than doing the dishes! So you better keep a supply of this detergent handy. Dish soap (aka “washing up liquid” in the U.K.) is formulated to contain soap that is strong enough to cut grease, but to be still gentle enough for skin.
For these uses, be sure to use a plain version of this product and not its antibacterial variety. The original formula works best!
1. Can be used to prevent a pair glasses from fogging up.
2. Fill a Zip lock bag with Dawn and put in the freezer. This makes a good cold pack.
3. Great bug killer (diluted). Spray all over your plants to keep bugs away. Use a fragrance-free natural dish soap for this.
4. Gets rid of grease spots on concrete and eliminates grease in your draining pipes.
5. Weed controller.
6. Car cleaner.
7. Shampoo for pets.
Dish soap trivia: The “Dawn” brand made news when the dishwashing liquid was used to clean oil-slicked birds which were contaminated by an oil spill. The International Bird Rescue Research Center used a diluted solution containing < 10 percent Dawn concentrate in water, which was able to remove the oil. Many birds have been saved this way but it is ironic that this product is petrochemical based - increasing our demand for oil! Nevertheless, this has been a public relations gold mine for the company, who have positioned themselves as a wildlife-loving company. Others however, argue about the brand's claim to being safe. It has been reported that it contains methylisothiazolinone or MIT. Methylisothiazolinone is a corrosive chemical that is toxic when inhaled, ingested, or applied to the skin or eyes. Not good! Dawn also may contain 1,4 dioxane which is considered a groundwater contaminant and carcinogen.
