In the modern urban world, farming is neither considered the most profitable nor glamorous profession. Yet, some people are ditching their well-paying corporate jobs, cashing in on their savings to buy farmland, and exploring the idea of farming as a lifestyle.

The motive behind this push is largely personal—including environmental idealism, entrepreneurial opportunities, and simply escaping the rat race of the 9-5 workday. In the case of Andrew Martin (as covered by Happen Films on YouTube), he felt a void while working in the Finance industry and living in the Big City. He realized that money was not and would never be the true answer to his happiness.

To get rid of this sense of malaise and disconnection, he decided to pursue his dream of farming. Andrew now owns a 5-acre piece of land in New Zealand, whereby he grows an impressive permaculture food forest, blossoming with hundreds of fruit trees.

For those who are not aware, permaculture is the practice of living in harmony with nature holistically. It is an agricultural approach that integrates people’s lifestyles with the landscape. This promotes sustainability, stability, resilience, and diversity of natural ecosystems. In other words, permaculture is a low-maintenance food production strategy that mimics the arrangements of natural ecosystems.

But as Andrew narrates, quitting you 9-5 office corporate job to venture into farming demands a certain level of dedication, humility, and a willingness/ability to learn new skills. It may be intimidating at first, but the rewards are priceless. It may fill the void in your heart (as in Andrew’s case), it may offer some neat cash to supplement your income, and it’s most definitely a great way to reconnect with nature.
