Here we see a documentary from the truly channel featuring a man who abandoned his ‘normal life’ in London to pursue a dream: Building his own home in the countryside.
The primary motivation was a common one – the realization that working for 2/3 of his life just to own his house wasn’t a good deal and despite having a good income, it was all gone every month.
Purchasing a piece of land in Wales on eBay, he set about building his home, which he proudly states utilized 80% to 90% recycled and found materials. The house walls are built using a technique known as “cobwood” – using logs that are held together by cob, a traditional building material made from mud and straw.
Amazingly, we learn that the total cost was around £3,000 to £4,000. It looks fantastic and “earthy”, and has running water and electricity. The house has off grid electric power derived from solar and hydroelectric.
Interestingly, we learn that despite now having a low income, he considers himself financially better off – of course – no mortgage or rent and very low overheads. Now he has a life of freedom.
Finally it’s interesting to learn that his previous partner ditched him when he made the leap of faith to pursue his dream. Undeterred, he decided to go ahead with it anyway, sleeping alone in a tent for months while the home was being built. But there’s something admirable and attractive about a man who follows his dream whether anyone is with down for him or not – and sure enough, we learn that he now has a beautiful new girlfriend who was thrilled to find him. He says “I feel more fulfilled and happier than I have ever been before”. What a great story.
