Here’s an interesting and informative video from AlfieAesthetics teaching us how to build a fire in damp / soaking conditions.

The first thing we learn is that the soaked ground underneath is one of the enemies of a wet weather fire. The solution is to build a platform for the fire – and Alfie uses some hardwood branches to create a barrier between the fire and the damp. The platform can also assist with “drawing” as it pulls air in via convection under the fire, which helps it go.

Stacking larger wood on the outside of the fire serves two purposes – it dries out the logs and prepares them for burning, and also reflects the heat from the fire back into the fire itself, increasing its temperature and drying it out still further. These details make all the difference if you are battling against the wet – and you need all the help you can get!

The next trick we learn is that the wood closely stacked around the perimeter of the fire will fall in and catch as the fire grows, and will burn up quickly, adding to the bed of embers – a key component of a wet weather fire.

Never use green / live wood. It won’t burn easily and shouldn’t be cut anyway. Choose dead twigs and branches that are still on trees and not fallen on the ground, if possible – as these will be drier. Split the wood in order to assist its burning.

Tinder can be made from fine twigs, birch bark, pine cones, pine resin, pine needles. Birch bark burns even when wet. Another clever trick is to use a pencil sharpener or knife blade to create fine shavings that are great for firelighting.

Start with fine / small materials and as the fire grows, increase the size of the materials you are using.
