Cloves (Syzygium aromaticum) are one of the spices that are immensely popular during the holiday season and are included in all kinds of warming, spicy recipes from cakes and savory dishes to mulled wine. Cloves pair especially well with cinnamon, allspice and vanilla.

However aside from their various uses in the kitchen, cloves are also highly touted for various health benefits. Long before we had the dental care we have today, people used clove to help toothache because it contains eugenol, a powerful substance that has both anesthetic and antiseptic qualities – combating pain and wiping out germs. Cloves are also reported beneficial for digestive issues and parasites.

Nowadays we have amazing anesthetics for dentistry and I’m truly thankful for them – but what happens when toothache hits at 1am or any other time / place when you cannot get immediate dental treatment? You have to do something and here’s where this “old school” method from our friends at Everyday Roots might come into its own.

You can get 3 forms of cloves: Ground, whole and the essential oil. According to the original article, the essential oil is the most effective for making the compress – but if you don’t have this in your home, you can still use the ground cloves. Because of its antibacterial properties, the clove will help kill the microorganism that causes inflammation. In old times, people would just chew a whole clove for toothache. Might be a good thing to pack in that survival kit…

Cloves are also reported to be beneficial in relieving upper respiratory infections! [1] A tea made from cloves is reported to help reduce symptoms or prevent sore throats, colds and flu. It makes sense with that eugenol content. Clove is also used as an expectorant, which means that it may support the body in getting rid of the phlegm in your lungs.

Because of it’s anti-inflammatory properties, clove is also used to treat scrapes and bruises. [2] A typical preparation would be to make a poultice by grinding several cloves and mix it with small amount of water to create a paste. Clean the wound and then apply the poultice over it. Leave it on for 3-5 minutes.

Cloves have a lot of medicinal benefits but you have to be careful, there are cases where this isn’t recommended. [3] Children should not take clove oil by mouth. It’s also not recommended for pregnant and lactating women, those with bleeding disorders (eugenol slows down blood clotting), and for those who are scheduled for surgery. It’s best to ask your doctor about this if you have other health concerns.

Sadly, and despite its long history of use in the West for dental pain, the U.S. FDA has reclassified eugenol, downgrading its effectiveness rating. The FDA now believes there isn’t enough evidence to rate eugenol as effective for toothache pain. (Is it just me, or is this absurd? Do centuries of use count for nothing? Is this another aspect of the Big Pharma anti-herbalism power play? It sure seems like it. This is just “what they do”; herbal remedies are just another “business enemy” to them.)

Clove Safety Notes

Never swallow clove essential oil. Clove oil is powerful and should be used sparingly. Frequent application to the mouth may cause damage to the soft tissues of the mouth. It’s also not recommended for pregnant and lactating women, those with bleeding disorders (eugenol slows down blood clotting), and for those who are scheduled for surgery. As always this site is not medical advice and not a replacement for consultation with a qualified medical professional.

😳 What Tinnitus Does To Your Brain Cells (And How To Stop It)
