Garlic is typically grown by “multiplying it”: Single cloves are planted and these develop into full bulbs. Choose the best cloves to plant and avoid planting ones that are soft or undersized.
It is usually planted either in October / November or very early spring, so that it can get the extended period of cool temps that it needs.
There are two main garlic types – hardneck and softneck. Hardneck is regarded as having much better flavour, however softneck will store better.
There is however a third variety – “elephant garlic” – which has massive cloves but a very mild flavour.
One of the challenges of garlic is weeds and the area should typically be weeded by hand – or use some kind of weed suppression layer around the plants.
When harvesting, don’t damage the garlic by pulling hard on the leaves. It’s better to use a garden fork so that the garlic pulls out super easily.
