A solar furnace is an interesting off grid device that uses concentrated power from the sun to produce high temperature. The principle behind it is being used to make inexpensive solar cookers and solar-powered barbecues. You can also create an inexpensive solar furnace to heat your home. This DIY project won’t cost you more than $50, and so it’s definitely worth a shot.

According to the video, you only need to re-salvage some black plastic, window panes, a PVC pipe, and a clothes dryer hose to construct a homemade solar furnace which is ideal to warm your house, storage, or garden shed during the colder months of the year. Since the structure needs sunlight to run, you need to install it on the side of your homestead that gets the most sunlight during the day.

In the video, the developer of the solar furnace said that he attached a smaller computer fan on the outlet that is wired to a 12-volt solar cell: When there is direct sun on the unit, it produces heat like a hair dryer. While the solar furnace is operationally adequate the way it is, having a better intake would make the device more efficient.

One of the video’s commenters noted that the solar furnace developer did a good job, but he recommended placing the furnace right under the window and venting it straight in. He also suggested upcycling an old big screen TV left on the curb and taking off the Fresnel lens for more concentrated solar gain. You could also utilize angled mirrors to catch more light.

Another commenter agreed with the use of the dryer hose for the solar furnace. It is clearly a lot better than messing around with piles of aluminum cans. Another one proposed a better design that involves having the intake close to the floor of the house and a much larger intake than the tiny tubes used for the furnace. He also said suggested orienting the glass, so it is directly perpendicular to the sun in the coldest months, for maximum solar gain.

Though the solar furnace is not designed to entirely heat your home, it is easy to make and scalable, saving you a load of money on cold, clear days. The video contains very simple step-by-step instructions, allowing anyone to rebuild the heating system in no time at all. This very cheap solar furnace is perfect for off-grid heating or just for anyone who wants to reduce their monthly utility expenses. It is also a zero-emission form of heating that will reduce carbon footprint and dependence on nuclear or fossil fuels!
