How To Grow Potatoes In Recycled Coffee Sacks! Photo – www.homegrownfun.com

This is a great idea for anyone who already grows their own food or is keen to make a start – the tutorial will show you how a simple old sack or two can make a big difference! Growing potatoes is quite easy and it makes a good introduction to vegetable growing – it’s ideal for involving children too: Hunting for potatoes in the soil, then cooking and eating them shows them where food comes from and is fun at the same time!

There are two sides to this story: A potato crop in open ground has its benefits, it will break up the soil and therefore is an ideal first crop on land that has not been used for cultivation before (or for a several years). On the down side, there is a lot of work (mainly digging) that goes with the usual method of cultivation so this can put some people off before they even start!

This ingenious coffee-sack method will take some of the strain out of gardening – it also means that those who don’t have the physical ability or strength to dig the ground can still enjoy the benefits of a home-grown crop.

Harvesting the potatoes by digging often results in a few of them being left behind – this can mean more likelihood of disease staying in an affected area of the garden as well as the occasional casualty of a potato with a fork through it! The sack method is so much easier and if you don’t have a garden or it’s too small then it’s ideal – the container method can be used in any small yard or on a balcony!

Old tires can also be used for growing potatoes – it’s easy to earth up the crop by gradually adding more – but there are concerns about using this method as chemicals will gradually leach into the soil as the tires gradually perish. ^[1] There is a lot of Zinc in tires that can cause problems for your plants – it is essential for growth but high zinc concentration may cause a build up of zinc toxicity, not to mention all of the other toxic materials that go into tyre manufacture! ^[2]
