This astonishing video from Primitive Technology demonstrates a man making a primitive “mud hut” using absolutely no manufactured tools or materials. Every single thing used in the construction of the hut is sourced in the natural environment of the forest around him. His sheer competence at improving his standard of life from such humble beginnings is impressive and inspirational.

The hut features a simple bed, raised off the ground. Our survivalist even demonstrates a technique of making fire using a stick rubbed rapidly between the hands. You can see the satisfaction at the moment when it finally sparks to life; though I can hardly imagine how much more difficult this would be if he didn’t get the fire started before the rains came.

What’s fascinating about this video is that it not only gives a ton of techniques that can be utilized by other people with an interest in simple survival – but also gives a glimpse into what the daily lives of our remote ancestors might once have been like.

We can also see how from these very basic beginnings, civilization began to form, gradually becoming advanced to the point where we can now travel to space and communicate with anyone around the globe in an instant.

“Wattle and Daub” is a very ancient building technique that combines a woven lattice (in the style of a basket) with some combination of wet soil, clay, sand, animal dung and straw used as a primitive “plaster”. [1]
