Here is an article (link after our commentary) that will give you instructions and helpful tips for setting up your very own versatile propagation system! The writer, Gayla, gives us her previous experience and teething troubles for this kind of lighting set-up and the ingenious ways that she has solved these problems. The article is a real gift to save others from making the same mistakes so we thought we should share it with you!

A lighting system like the one described can be used to grow plants from seed and to provide warmer, brighter conditions for those that need them. It will give full protection from frost and give you greater scope for propagating plants that are non-native – It could be ideal for cacti and succulents in a cold wet climate.

There is plenty of info about materials and prices in the article, which is very helpful, but to be honest not a lot for connecting the lights and heaters. It’s ultra-important to stay safe when making any project that has both water and electricity involved – they must stay separate! The set-up used here has ideas for doing just that. The use of boot mats is a stroke of genius! If you’re not sure about how to do the wiring safely, please get some advice from a qualified electrician before you begin and ask them to check your wiring set-up before connecting anything up to the mains electricity.

If you already grow your own vegetables – or would like to start – a lighting and heating system allows you to plant seeds much earlier than it’s possible to do outdoors, or even in an unheated greenhouse. When the weather is warmer outside, your seedlings will be well established before planting out so they will be ready to harvest earlier in the year – you’ll be able to grow a wider variety of crops by adding some that wouldn’t otherwise have time to ripen during a normal outdoor growing season.

Plants grown under cover will grow differently from those outside – the growth is quicker but often weaker so they will be more easily damaged by wind, rain or strong sunlight when they are planted out. Here’s an important tip to help with this transition: the problem can be solved if your precious seedlings and young plants are given time to adjust to differences in temperature before going into the ground – the way to achieve this is to put them outdoors in their trays during the daytime for a week or two in a partly sheltered spot, bringing them back in every night before finally planting them in the garden.

Note that using a system like this will increase the humidity in your property so you may need to take steps to avoid an excess that causes mildew or mould growth. Adequate ventilation is needed (or you may need to run a de-humidifier at times) but there are plenty of benefits for gardeners here! Happy growing!
