This video by The Domestic Geek is truly brilliant: make-ahead homemade soups in mason jars! They’re quick, easy and perfect for those who want to spend less time cooking. Put one of these together in the evening, put it into the fridge overnight and take it out right before use.
Cooking in camp can be difficult and these meal jars will be the perfect solution. Just add hot water and your meal is ready to eat!
The video shows five healthy recipes but there is really no limit to the types of meal you can make in mason jars. You can make your own variations.
Things to remember:
1. Anything that needs to be cooked, such as chicken, shrimp or hard veggies, should be cooked in advance. The hot water just heats the soup, it doesn’t cook it.
2. Any type of noodles can be used in these cups but noodles that require actual cooking should be pre-cooked to al dente. If the noodles are too well cooked, they will become soggy when you add the hot water. If you plan to use instant noodles, there is no need to cook.
3. Keep in mind that different ingredients have different shelf lives. Anything with cooked chicken or seafood should be eaten within a day or two. Veggie soups will last longer. All of the soups should be refrigerated until they are eaten.
4. Let your jar sit out of the fridge for 10 or 15 minutes before adding your hot water. If you fail to do this, your jar may crack or break from the sudden temperature change.
