Coal, oil and natural gas are among the main sources of energy used throughout the world, but all these three are non-renewable – meaning they are all finite resources that will eventually become depleted – and as a result will become too costly or too destructive to the environment to continue to use. The video shows three homemade windmill designs which you can replicate to generate power at a small scale.

1. Horizontal windmill – The classic windmill but the blades must face towards the direction of the wind for it to work.

2. Vertical windmill – Can generate power no matter what the direction of the wind is blowing.

3. Sharp flutter windmill – by Peter Allen Sharp. The idea here is that there are two sails attached to strings and these are hung vertically from a frame. When the wind blows and the sails flutter they pull the strings and this movement generates power.

Aside from wind other popular sources of renewable energy are solar and water. When you plan on choosing wind power, make sure that you live in an area where the wind is constantly blowing because the power that you can generate is dependent on the wind speed. The following are the advantages as well as the disadvantages of wind power:

Pros:

• Wind is free and with the proper technology it can be effectively generated to power.
• The energy is 100% clean. It does not have green house gases and other pollutants.
• Remote areas that cannot be connected to the electricity power grid can now produce their own supply.
• It is one of the lowest-priced renewable energy technologies available today.

Cons:

• Wind is an unreliable factor. In many areas, the wind strength fluctuates.
• Wind turbine construction can be very expensive.
• The turbines might cause noise pollution.
• Turbine blades can damage local wildlife. Birds have been killed by flying into spinning turbine blades. Some types of vertical windmill however have overcome this problem – ones the blades spin at a certain speed, the birds perceive them as solid and fly round them.

Wind energy has seen huge potential over the last few years and if you want to start small then these homemade windmills are surely going to help you kick start in your next project.
