This short video features an amazing car that is powered by compressed air – this is great news as it could offer us a really clean form of transport at last! The inventors of the car talk about their design and why it could be the best answer to date for tackling the massive pollution problems from extracting crude oil and using it to make fuel.

The AirPod is a creation that has the best of intentions behind it and looks like a viable alternative, especially with its low price tag (around $10,000!) – it is already generating a lot of interest worldwide! Air quality in cities is a major issue that affects our health and is particularly bad for children. The air-powered car is emission free!

One thing to bear in mind is that energy is still required to make it work and that this has to be produced somewhere. However, the compressors required to fill the air cylinders can use renewables – and so this is a concept to reduce urban pollution.

When we think of the main causes of pollution in the world, cars powered by fossil fuels are very high up the list. The modern world is filling up with cars that burn huge quantities of fuel. Oil is the most widely consumed fuel on earth and is used primarily for transport – oil production involves the largest corporations on earth!

As oil supplies are harder to extract, the environmental damage that is caused increases, have a look at Canada’s tar sands as an example. Some of the world’s worst conflicts are fought over natural resources like oil. A cleaner car at an affordable price will put the power of choice back in the hands of ordinary people – this recent development couldn’t have come too soon, so let’s spread the word!

The statistics for this design look good all round (well, except for the top speed!). Until now, options for alternatives to petroleum power have been half-hearted, mainly based on electric cars or hybrids. Compressed air can be produced easily and efficiently with renewable sources of energy – I was surprised to find out that this technology has been around for longer than the internal combustion engine, and we know it works!

The future of the air car isn’t quite clear but there are other companies developing the idea – some manufacturers are using gasoline in combination with compressed air to maintain performance (instead of improving the engine in greener ways) and changes to refueling stations would need to be made if the idea catches on, but overall it could be a massive step in the right direction. Best of all, this technology isn’t just a dream, it’s available now!
