In this video, it is shown how to generate electricity using a bicycle. While this might not produce enough electricity to power the entire home, it can provide useful power and potential emergency usefulness. It can be used to power small appliances or store the electricity in batteries to use later. Plus, it is undeniably a great workout.
The guy in the video walks you through setting up the equipment and wiring to get it working. The voltage requirements, as well as the recommended batteries, are also given. The main component of this system is the alternator. This is a device which converts mechanical energy into electrical energy and it works somewhat like a generator (but the two machines do have differences). Alternators are considered to be far more efficient than generators as they conserve energy by using only the energy that is needed while generators run continuously irrespective of load. While a human-powered generator won’t produce as much as a large solar panel or wind turbine setup, it can produce enough power that contributes to your overall energy needs.
The bicycle generator is a good back up if you have solar panels installed. Solar power is solely dependent on heat of the sun and for those cloudy or rainy days, the bicycle generator will surely come in handy. Some are skeptical about this bike generator. Little power is generated and the materials needed can be costly but if want to give your indoor cycling a purpose then this is the way to go. It can provide power when there is neither sun nor wind.
Again, the bicycle generator is not really intended to dramatically reduce your electricity bill. For the off-gridders, it is seen more as a good backup if the power generated from solar panels is inadequate and it can charge batteries as well as power electric devices directly.
